Robert O'Connor was The Effigies second guitarist, joining the group after original guitarist Earl Letiecq was fired from the band in 1984. He recorded two LPs with the band, 1985's Fly On A Wire and 1986's Ink. His time in the band signaled a break from their early, harder-edged sound into a more post-punk direction. After The Effigies split in 1986, Robert formed the band Machines in Motion with his wife and former Effigies' bandmates Paul Zamost and Steve Economou but the band only last a couple of shows before breaking up. He has not been apart of any of The Effigies' reunions.

For many years, Robert fronted his own blues band called The Bob O'Connor Band.
