The Vindictives are one of the classic Chicago pop punk bands which formed before pop punk became really popular in 1994. Joey Vindictive sang sneering screeds against conformity and society, but always wrapped in really catchy melodies that instantly became stuck in your head. For some years, Joey Vindictive also owned and operated a record store called the Dummy Room, which was on Grand Ave.
The Chicago Punk Database
This site intends to be a collections of bands, members, labels etc. for the Chicago punk scene. This page specifically focuses on the earlier Chicago scene - though there is no formal cutoff date, the information on this page pretty much focuses on Chicago punk before 1990. If you have content to add for the early-to-mid 90s feel free to contribute. All you have to do to add pages is create an account and start making pages. Click here for more info on how to edit pages.

There are NUMBEROFARTICLES articles in the database, most of which are small and need more information. Some suggestions to get started - add a link to an unlisted band on left-hand side of this page, go to a band's page and add members/instruments, fix any spelling errors, or create new page about your favorite Chicago Punk record. Anything you can add will help tremendously, so please contribute today!

In early February 2010, Chicago long two vital and longtime contributors to their music scene. Engineer Iain Burgess is often created with crediting the "Chicago Sound" and recorded just about every Chicago band you can think of in the 1980s. Rick Ponce had been playing guitar and attending punk/metal shows consistently from the 1980s until his death. Both men died of issues related to cancer, R.I.P. Thanks to everyone who helped punkdatabase reach 600 unique pages (for page #500 was the Insane War Tomatoes). Pretty damn remarkable when I think about it. There's still a lot of work to be done, especially with regards to venues and some of the more obscure bands. Please keep on contributing and lets see if we can hit a cool 1000! -Gantry

Dan Schafer has been a part of Chicago's punk scene since the mid 1980's. Although usually credited under his real name, his best known by his psuedonym "Dan Vapid", which he used during his tenure in Screeching Weasel. Schafer got his start singing for hardcore bands, but since the late '80's, he has focused on playing pop-punk. He is currently playing in the band Dan Vapid and The Cheats.

Nationally, Schafer is best recognized for his stints in Screeching Weasel. In the liner notes of SW's 1995 Kill The Musicians compilation, Ben Weasel noted that Schafer seemed to attend virtually every local show the band played prior to joining the group. In 1989, Schafer approached the band about becoming their bassist after the previous bass player had left the group. Initially christened "Sewercap" by the group, Schafer's stint in the band was short-lived. He and drummer Brian Vermin formed the side-project Sludgeworth that same year and that would soon lead to the break up of Screeching Weasel. Screeching Weasel played a reunion show in 1991, after which Schafer proposed the idea of reforming the group. Now renamed "Dan Vapid", Schafer played 2nd guitar for the group until more line up changes eventually pushed him back into his former role as bassist. He quit the group again in early 1994 and the band dissolved a few months later. Screeching Weasel reunited again in 1996 but Schafer left permanently in 1997. He did appear with the group in some one-off reunion shows in 2004. He was with the band again in 2009 was Ben Weasel resurrected Screeching Weasel for live appearences. There is no word at this time whether or not the band will record again.

Sludgeworth
See main article: Sludgeworth

Dan Schafer was the singer of this popular quintet from 1989 until 1993. The group split because Schafer wanted to continue with more of the pop-punk sound they were popular for while the other members wanted to pursue more of a funk and alternative rock direction. He has done several reunion shows with the group.

Riverdales
See main article: The Riverdales

In 1995, Schafer reunited with former Screeching Weasel vocalist Ben Foster (aka Ben Weasel) and drummer Dan Sullivan (aka Dan Panic) to form this heavily Ramones-influence band. In the band, Schafer played bass and split songwriting and singing duties with Ben. Their song "Back To You", sung by Schafer, was featured in the movie Angus . The group also performed on a European tour with Green Day, which has been blamed by Ben Foster as the catalyst for the Riverdales' early demise (the group called in quits in 1997). In 2003, Schafer and Foster reunited with a new drummer to record a new LP. The band went on hiatus after that but returned in 2009 with a new drummer and a new record.

The Mopes
The Mopes were a short-lived late-'90s project featuring Dan, Jughead from Screeching Weasel, former Queers bassist B-Face, and drummer Dan Lumley. They released 2 CDs on Lookout Records but only made a few (3 or 4) live performances.

The Methadones
The Methadones started a side-project in 1993, but Schafer resurrected the band (in which he plays guitar and sings) in 1999. It has since remained his main band. The group has several albums and features members of the The Bomb, Jeff Pezzati's band.

Noise By Numbers
Noise By Numbers is another project for Dan which also includes Jeff Dean of The Bomb. The band's first album is scheduled to be released by Asian Man Records in November 2009.

Other Bands
Schafer got his start singing for the hardcore bands Igor Skulls and Generation Waste in the mid '80's. Generation Waste recorded an LP but it appears to have gone unreleased in their lifetime and an attempt to issue it posthumously by guitarist Ted Domurat was stalled when he could not get all of the other members to agree to the release. Dan also made an appearance as a "Slaughterette" on the 1987 LP Those Who Laugh Last...Laugh Alone by Impulse Manslaughter. In 1994, Schafer toured as 2nd guitarist for the Queers, and is credited for playing on their 1994 LP Beat Off.

While Naked Raygun might be Chicago's most beloved punk band, Screeching Weasel is arguably the most well-known on a national level. From 1986 until 2001, the band issued a slew of LPs, EPs, and compilation tracks despite frequent line-up changes, record label problems, break-ups, and controversies and animosities that seemed to follow frontman Ben Weasel. In 2009, Ben announced that the band was reforming again, this time without guitarist and co-founder Jughead. The band went under some other reformations and break-ups, and then reformed in 2011. At a SXSW performance that year, Ben Weasel punched an audience member, after which the then current line-up quit the band. Weasel reformed the band again, and released the EP Carnival of Shade-In-Froid.

No Empathy was a Chicago-based punk band started in late 1983 by Marc Ruvolo (Vocals) and Iggy Recinos (Bass). The two had met while playing in a short-lived version of Gross National Product and soon decided to start a band of their own. Shortly after, Craig White was added on Guitar and Chris Russell on drums. Their first show was on July 13th, 1984 at
a downtown Chicago YMCA. Recinos left the band after three shows and was replaced by Tom Costanzo. Ruvolo became the only constant member over the band’s 13 year run, but the line-up of Ruvolo, Martin Geraghty, Chuck Uchida, Steve Gallup, and Kurt Stephens is considered the “classic” line-up which recorded most of the band’s output and lasted seven years. In that time, the band shared the stage with many punk legends such as 7 Seconds, Fear, Stiff Little Fingers, Bad Brains, NOFX and Fugazi, plus touring the continental US numerous times. Ruvolo also started Johann’s Face Records to release No Empathy material, which soon after expanded to release records by other bands such as The Smoking Popes, Alkaline Trio, Apocalypse Hoboken and many more. The label continues today and is approaching 100 releases.

No Empathy announced that they are playing a reunion show on April 4, 2009 at the 20th Anniversary Show of Johann's Face Records.

Underdog Records was a label started by Russ Forster in 1986. Russ was a member of a number bands, such as Fudgetunnel, Sponge (not the '90s alternative band), and Spongetunnel. Among Underdog's early releases were records by ID Under, Screeching Weasel, Impulse Manslaughter, Group of Individuals, and Friends of Betty (along with Russ's own bands). Sometime in either late 1989 or early 1990, Russ opted to give up running the label. He turned over control to a collective headed by Douglas Ward, Ben Weasel, and Jughead. To celebrate the birth of the Underdog Collective, the label released a compilation called Achtung Chicago, which featured bands such as Screeching Weasel, Gear, Ivy League, The Watchmen, Billingsgate, Apocalypse Hoboken, and Target, amongst others. Weasel and Jughead would leave the collective early on, but Douglas would remain on throughout the collective's existence. The Underdog Collective was staffed entirely by volunteers. Aside from putting out records by bands like the Bollweevils, 8-Bark, Cap'n Jazz, Gauge, Eskimo Nation, The Geezers, and many others, the Collective published a zine, put on shows, and distributed music by other local bands that had been released on other independent labels. Unfortunately, by the mid '90s, volunteers were becoming harder and harder to come by. Underdog Records officially shut down in 1997, although the zine would continue on for a some time afterwards. Russ continued publishing zines with 8-Track Mind.
The Fireside Bowl is a Logan Square bowling alley that was also a punk haven in the 1990s. It is located at 2648 W. Fullerton, Chicago. The Fireside was booked primarily by Brian Peterson but also by Dave Eaves. Currently, the Fireside's primary function is as a bowling alley and hosts seasonal leagues, however occasionally, some shows have been happening mostly put on by Phantom Note Productions. From 1994-2004, the Fireside played host to thousands of local and touring bands, a number of which would go on to become note-worthy. The legacy of the Fireside, in someways, will be compared to that of the venues 924 Gilman of Berkeley, CA and ABC No Rio of New York City. While all three of these venues catered to the punk and hardcore acts of their eras, the Fireside's main difference was that it was not necessarily organized as a DIY community center. Regardless, the Fireside still played a very important role as a galvanizing epicenter for the burgeoning punk scenes of the mid 90s through the mid 00s, with ripple effects reverberating out until the present day. Brian Peterson is currently the owner/operator of the Logan Square venue and restaurant, Township.

A documentary about the Fireside is currently in the works.

This timeline is intended to provide a quick overview of the history of punk in Chicago.

This timeline should be limited to Chicago bands, clubs, publications, and so on. The only exceptions are a few "milestone" events that have been included in italics to provide wider context.

This Timeline should not grow to the point where it is too long to be an overview. Please only list one or two significant events for any given entity. Events involving other bands coming to Chicago, or other activities where Chicagoans are not the lead characters, should not be listed here. They can, however, be included on the specific page for that year.

Please add events to the timeline in chronological order with exact dates where possible. Try to limit your entries to a single line. Footnotes should be added where facts are in dispute or indisputable sources are available. Also include links to web sources as part of the footnote if available.

Where a part of a date is not known please indicate that with "??". Unknown dates are listed after known dates. Where an exact month isn't known the season can be used instead using a two letter code.

Los Crudos were a South Side hardcore band from 1991 to 1999. They were pioneers in the entire Chicago scene, as they sung almost exclusively in Spanish and fiercely adhered to the DIY ethic. The impact of Los Crudos is felt today - not just in the vibrance of the current Southkore and spanish-speaking hardcore movement, but the acceptance of said movement in the predominantly white punk scenes in the North side, suburbs and country at large.

Crudos played a reunion show at the 2005 Southkore festival in Little Village.

Los Crudos also played two reunion shows in 2013 at Chicago Futbol.

Do you really want to limit it to pre 1990? Lets bump it up to 1997.. like ten years ago? What do you think? Xsxex 11:37, 2 February 2007 (CST)

: In the About Page I kind of "bumped up" the cutoff date to Naked Raygun's breakup in 1992. Nothing is really formal, but I'd prefer most of the info to deal with bands that got their start in the 80s or early 90s. I'm not really going to stop anyone from making pages, but for now there's so much to add for the early scene that I'd prefer to keep the scope there. If things keep taking off the way they have been (thanks Patrick and Bryan K!) then I'll likely expand the scope later on and include more of the 90s scene. Gantry 12:51, 2 February 2007 (CST)

Just for the record, even though i love old punk, new punk is still touring and artists careers are out there so i would have thought it would be equally important to get new bands names out there. just a thought. Dr tv

: I love new punk as well, but the current bands have TONS of sites devoted to them. Not to mention that if this site started focusing on newer bands, people would come in simply to promote their own band. My intention for this site is to get info on bands that have little-to-no presence on the Internet, I don't think people are going to come here to look up new bands since they all have MySpace pages, people actively promoting them online via message boards, music sites and the like. Gantry 09:43, 31 March 2009 (CST)

Woah, looks like its been quite a while since I've last logged in. This website is still a really awesome resource. As I've aged, I think I've matured slightly, and I think I understand where Gantry is coming from, however, I do think that since this site does seem to have become somewhat stagnant in recent years, and does need some updating, maybe it is time to extend the year parameters a bit. Maybe through 1998, wihch is 15 years ago? Or how about 1993, 20 years ago? Also, I think its probably time to make a facebook page for this site, and try to renew interest and get more content. Actually thinking about it more, I think 1993 is a good cut-off year, 20 years being a good amount of time for any phenomenon to become "vintage" enough to be included with the rest of the Chicago Punk Rock history. Thoughts? --Xsxex (talk) 15:40, 4 September 2013 (CDT)
