Ring 13 were a high-school-aged punk band from Dekalb from about 1983 to 1986. During their existance, Ring 13 recorded a self-released cassette tape and two tracks on the Dial-a-Trance compilation. Their most memorable shows outside of Dekalb were Articles of Faith's final show and a show at The Metro with Out of Order. Mike Crown and Steve Ross from The Subverts occassionally filled in for members. Over 20 years later, the complete Ring 13 catalog will shortly be released on CD by members of the band.

On August 22nd 2007, Ring 13 played their first show in 22 years at Ottos in Dekalb.

Ring 13 reformed on August 22nd in 2009 at the Abbey Pub in Chicago. Ring 13 performed in Chicago for the first time in 24 years along with Blatant Dissent, Subverts, Happy Hunting and Otis Ball and The Chains.
The Chicago Punk Database
This site intends to be a collections of bands, members, labels etc. for the Chicago punk scene. This page specifically focuses on the earlier Chicago scene - though there is no formal cutoff date, the information on this page pretty much focuses on Chicago punk before 1990, though there is a rapidly growing collection of information on 1990-1999 bands. If you have content to add for an era feel free to contribute. All you have to do to add pages is create an account and start making pages. Click here for more info on how to edit pages.

There are NUMBEROFARTICLES articles in the database, most of which are small and need more information. Some suggestions to get started - add a link to an unlisted band on left-hand side of this page, go to a band's page and add members/instruments, fix any spelling errors, or create new page about your favorite Chicago Punk record. Anything you can add will help tremendously, so please contribute today!
John Pierson (aka Jughead from Screeching Weasel) and Russ Forster did a fantastic podcast on Big Black's Atomizer record. It has interviews with Santiago Durango, Steve Albini, Camilo Gonzalez and Jeff Pezzati on the beginnings of Big Black and how that record came to be. The Jugheads Basement podcast previously focused on such groundbreaking 80s Chicago records as Naked Raygun's Throb Throb and Screeching Weasel's My Brain Hurts. == History ==

Originally there was Matt Parker (Guitar, Vocals), Tim Fowler (Guitar, Vocals) and Dave Fishman (Drums). At the time, Fishman and Fowler were also playing in the DeKalb band Blatant Dissent. Parker had most recently played bass, keyboards and guitar with Barrington, IL's The Reverbs (including two opening slots for The Clash in Des Moines and Davenport), backing up Reverbs mainstays Ric Menck and John Brabek. For a short time Tom Clark (later of Blatant Dissent) joined on bass - at this point the band was known as "The Banana Convention" and played their first show on January 20, 1985 at Northern Illinois University's Duke Ellington Ballroom for an anti-inaugural ball mourning the second term of Reagan. happy hunting played as a three piece for the next year until they added Frank Mundo to the lineup on bass. This lasted until the Spring of 1988 when happy hunting broke up for the first time. Fowler, Parker and Mundo went on to form The Deconstructives with drummer Tom Ellett. In this band Parker played bass and Mundo played guitar. When Mundo left the band in 1989 the band reverted to the happy hunting moniker. This line up lasted until 1990 after Parker and Fowler had moved to Chicago with Ellett the only remaining DeKalb resident. The band replaced Ellett with Tom Rose (ex-Blue Green God) on bass and Sport (ex The Francos) on drums, with Parker moving back to guitar. This lineup lasted until 1992.

At this point Parker began playing with Baby Nonstop (with Sport and other ex-Francos Mark Royko and Byronne Hepkema), while Fowler joined Lava Sutra and later The Chamber Strings. Later, Parker joined Chicago power-pop legends the Hushdrops and released a solo album (Private Jet) in 1998 featuring guest appearances by Fowler and members of the Hushdrops, as well as ex- Blue Green God drummer Don Yanek.

happy hunting regrouped in 2001 when Fowler and Parker found themselves living in the same bulding with a vacant unused basement. The album Butterfat Town, was produced at this time, featuring Sport on drums and released in 2002. 2004 saw the release of the New Wave/Classic Rock tinged According to St. Bernardus, then the 2006, the release of de Opstapper followed by 2008's Joe! (A Rock and Roll Soap Opera). All recordings are available as free downloads at happyhunting.org. happy hunting played their first live show in 15 years at Silvies in Chicago in August of 2007 with Don Yanek on drums, with a redux at 2009's DeKalb Rocks! reunion in both Chicago and DeKalb.

NEWSFLASH!!!! Both Tom Rose (Bass) and Tom Ellett (Drums) have rejoined happy hunting.

A new album will be recorded in February and March of 2011, to be released in the late summer of 2011. happy hunting World Tour begins in January 2012. Jerusalem, Johannesburg, DeKalb, Groeningen, Vancouver, Brugge, Berlin and more.
Dial-a-Trance was a compilation Chicagoland punk bands (and one from Hammond, IN) that was probably released in early 1985. It wasn't affiliated with a label, just recorded and distributed by the folks in Certain Death. Many of the bands in Dial-A-Trance aren't very well known, even locally, and may be their only known recordings. The release was cassette only and each featured an insert with band logos, description of the naming and some writing by Danny Imig.

Year: Early 1985

Covers: Tracks rage in date from 1983 - 1985 (all bands where active in 1985)
Record Label: None - Certain Death at this point had put out 3 cassettes on their own from 4 & 16 track recordings bought cassettes in bulk (not store bought maxell or TDK and the like) created their own cover art and went to a local printer and had the covers printed hired local radio station to mass produce cassettes releasing them as "CD01" and so on as in any reference to a record label ... this comp is "CD04"

Where or what is the name "Dial A Trance" all about otto ?!?
Dial A Trance was an actual sevice we used to see broadcast on TV Ads here in Northern Illinois and Indiana and Wisconsin .. one was supposed to call up the 312# and
be put into a hypnotic trance to make all ones cares go away ... it was pathic ... and the world we lived in then was so whacked thanx to der fuher reagan that people actually thought this shit up .. and well someone was calling in ...

The cassette itself came with a flyer stuffed inside .. yeah i still have mine and yes its falling apart and yes years ago i put scotch tape on it and YES ya twits its still falling a part ... i had scanned it some years ago but it seems i never burned the fucking scans and lost them in a crash ... the front of the fly has the bands on the cassette and a lil artwork for them .. like their lil symbols and band logos .. also is an artical about Dial A Trance and what they are all about by the company that was dial a trance ...

On the back we find what Danny Sleeze (Certain Death member) thinks of dial a trance the society at the time .. videos & television ... heres a lil exp ...

# "If you dial area code (312) 792-1051 you'll get a Chicago area hypnotist who tries to put you in a trance over the phone. After you're in this supposed trance he tells you to relax, forget your problems and be "mature"
# "But this hypnotist is just one cog in the massive machine that tries to sedate you into cooperation with it, so that it (the machine) profits, and you depend on it"

Thats only a fraction of whats written but tells you a lil about dial a trance and the shit back then that pist us off that even more present today in der fuher bush's america
This lasted until the Spring of 1988 when happy hunting broke up for the first time. Fowler, Parker and Mundo went on to form The Deconstructives with drummer Tom Ellet. In this band Parker played bass and Mundo played guitar. When Mundo left the band in 1989 the band reverted to the happy hunting moniker. This line up lasted until 1990 after Parker and Fowler had moved to Chicago with Ellet the only remaining DeKalb resident. The band replaced Ellet with Tom Rose(ex-Blue Green God) on bass and Sport (ex The Francos) on drums, Parker moving back to guitar. This lineup lasted until 1992.

At this point Parker played with Baby Nonstop (with Sport and other ex-Francos Mark Royko and Byronne Hepkema), and Fowler joined Lava Sutra and later The Chamberstrings who he still plays with. Later Parker joined Chicago power-pop band Hushdrops and released a solo album(Private Jet) in 1998 featuring guest appearances by Fowler and members of the Hushdrops, as well as ex- Blue Green God drummer Don Yanek.

happy hunting regrouped in 2001 when Fowler and Parker found themselves living in the same bulding with a vacant unused basement. The album ,Butterfat Town, was produced at this time. Featuring Sport on drums and released in 2002. 2004 saw the release of the New Wave/Classic Rock tinged According to St. Bernardus, then the 2006 release de Opstapper followed by 2008's Joe: The Album. All recordings available for free down load at happyhunting.org. happy hunting played their first live show in 15 years at Silvies in Chicago in August of 2007, Don Yanek on drums. They are currently recording a new record in their NW Chicago studios.
History
Originally there was Matt Parker (Guitar, Vocals), Tim Fowler (Guitar, Vocals) and Dave Fishman (Drums). Fishman and Fowler were also playing in the DeKalb band Blatant Dissent at the time, Parker had most recently played bass, keyboards and guitar with Barrington, IL's The Reverbs (including two opening slots for The Clash in Des Moines and Davenport) backing up Reverbs mainstays Ric Menck and John Brabek. For a short time Tom Clark (later of Blatant Dissent) joined on bass, at this point the band was known as "The Banana Convention" and played their first show on January 20, 1985 at Northern Illinois University's Duke Ellington Ballroom for an anti-inaugural ball mourning the second term of Reagan. happy hunting played as a three piece for the next year until they added Frank Mundo to the lineup. on bass.
