The Chicago Punk Database
This site intends to be a collections of bands, members, labels etc. for the Chicago punk scene. This page specifically focuses on the earlier Chicago scene - but is open to all eras past and present, the information on this page pretty much focuses on Chicago punk before 1990, though there is a growing collection of information on 1990-Present bands. If you have content to add for an era feel free to contribute. All you have to do to add pages is create an account and start making pages. Click here for more info on how to edit pages.

There are NUMBEROFARTICLES articles in the database, most of which are small and need more information. Some suggestions to get started - add a link to an unlisted band on left-hand side of this page, go to a band's page and add members/instruments, fix any spelling errors, or create new page about your favorite Chicago Punk record. Anything you can add will help tremendously, so please contribute today!
Trial By Fire record released after 35 years
Although it was recorded in 1982, Trial By Fire's record was never released at the time. After thirty five years Alona's Dream Records finally gave it a formal release. The sounds holds up today and could very well have been the first hardcore record from a Chicago band. You'll notice many songs that have been done by other bands, including the famous opener to Naked Raygun's Vanilla Blue. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy from Alona's Dream, you won't regret it.

John Pierson (aka Jughead from Screeching Weasel) and Russ Forster did a fantastic podcast on Big Black's Atomizer record. It has interviews with Santiago Durango, Steve Albini, Camilo Gonzalez and Jeff Pezzati on the beginnings of Big Black and how that record came to be. The Jugheads Basement podcast previously focused on such groundbreaking 80s Chicago records as Naked Raygun's Throb Throb and Screeching Weasel's My Brain Hurts. They released The Bothered EP in 2019, containing the local hit, "Poland Pound". CherryHead gained a small but local following pretty fast. Fronted by Jackson Giampa, CherryHead's sound is a mixture of hardcore, pop punk, and california punk, similar to Wavves and Fidlar. Their first studio album is currently being recorded at the moment.

While a punk scene has always been present in the area (DuPage, Kane, Dekalb, Surrounding areas), this page is about the new wave of punk bands that emerged mainly in the 21st century and the sound that links many of them together. While the sound of the western suburbs punk scene can be traced back to the 1990s, it started to rise after the turn of the century. In some instances the poppier sound became popular nationwide in the 2000s (decade) but unlike most of the country, the sound is still very prominent in this area. While there isn’t as many punk venues out west, there are a ton of bars and DIY places that hold live music and many bands play house parties. Because many bands play at the same venues, many bands know each other well and often exchange members.
Sound of Western Suburbs Punk
Like much of the Chicago suburbs, pop punk is inescapable therefore the same is said in the western suburbs. Many of the bands stem from pop punk roots but many of them have a different approach. Many incorporate hardcore aspects to their live performances and bring a more agressive sound the the table. The use of guitar tends to favor simplistic solos and rhythm on top of a fast based hardcore rhythm section. Many compare the sound as similar to that of 90s and 00s Green Day but often with more rawness to it. Considering the time frame, production value on many recordings tends to be high quality than past decades.

Culture of Western Suburbs Punk
Throughout the area the straight edge culture has prominance but isn’t the entire culture. There isn’t a set unique fashion either. While some go a more traditional 70s punk style, some chose to remain in casual wear. At shows, moshing is the norm for most bands and most venues accept it with the main exception being Penny Road Pub. Because many of the bands are connected in some way shape or form, it has become a tradition to meet up at local Steak & Shakes and Denny’s after playing or watching a show.

Bet The Levels was a band formed in the western suburbs of Chicago in 2012 by Dan Skretteburg, Brendyn Wirtz, Sam Donner, and Tyler Dalora. The bands sound stemmed from punk roots and bands ranging from the Ramones, Green Day, Weezer, and many more. They played many notable venues in the western suburbs that hosted punk and pop punk shows in the 2010s such as Pub Yahoo and The Waiting Room. It is important to note many members would also work with other west suburban bands of the 2010s.

History of the Band
The band formed in 2012. Dan Skretteburg had previously been in other small bands but for the most part, all the members were just getting started. After playing a few shows, Dan assumed the role of lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Brendyn played lead guitar and backing vocals, while Tyler was on bass while Sam was on drums.

In 2014, the original lineup released their debut album, Don’t Punch The Driver, on Bandcamp. It was produced by Brendyn. Songs from the album were played in concert regularly. Songs such as “Converse Man” and “GE Days” were fan favorites and played at almost every show. After the release of Don’t Punch The Driver, Tyler and Sam left the band and were replaced with Mason Brewner on bass guitar and Jake Herlihey in drums. By this time, Bet The Levels played a fair amount of shows in the Western Suburbs and developed a small but loyal fanbase. Their EP, Josh’s Nightmare, was released in 2015 and featured better production as much of it was recorded at Morley House Studios. Songs like “Cavaties At Midnight” became concert favorites and the video on YouTube got a few hundred views.

Despite new music written by Skretteburg, Bet The Levels split up in 2017 due to tensions and musical differences with Brendyn Wirtz focusing on his other projects (Bad Jokes and Paper Towels) as did Mason Brewner (The Deathstrokes) and Dan Skretteburg (solo material).

In August 2018, the band reunited and played a final show at The Waiting Room in Naperville.

In 2019, Dan Skretteburg would work with fellow musician and friend, EDRE, to work on recording and releasing the material he had been writing, including some meant for Bet The Levels, and perhaps forming a new band.
Paper Towels is known for having a very different sound from many of his other projects as well as bands from the same scene. Paper Towels’ sound stems from punk and pop punk roots but is known to incorperate many electronic and synth sections and leads throughout most of his music with some songs going full electronic punk.
Paper Towels was created by Brendyn Wirtz in 2017 after Bet The Levels split. It didn’t take long for the music to make it’s way in Spotify and score him shows across the suburbs, most notably The Waiting Room. Luckily many fans of his previous works were interested in his new project as well. By 2019, two EPs (The Absorbant EP, Year of The Dog) and a few singles are available to listen too.

Throughout the area the straight edge culture has prominance but isn’t the entir culture.
As of 2019, two EPs (The Absorbant EP, Year of The Dog) and a few singles are available to listen too. Paper Towels is in many ways one of the most unique sounding artists when compared to their other local bands in the scene.
