Ruby Zel

Ruby Zel was a band based out of the southwest suburbs, and was active in the late 90's. They were a three piece, all girl band, headed by singer Nikki Haggerty. Carly Lopez played bass. One might describe Nikki's voice as a female counterpart of Steve Walker of My Big Beautiful, who was heavily influenced by Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes. Nikki's falsetto, captivating vocals over their pop, upbeat yet emotional melodies could have made for one of the best female groups in Chicago's punk history. Sadly, only a couple of demo tapes floated around locally and few shows were booked, and Ruby Zel split up before really making a mark on the scene.
