Dem Hopkins was the owner/manager of Oz and played a huge role in the early 80s scene. Dem ran Oz out of three different locations from 1978 through 1981. After Oz, he opened a drag bar called F-Beat and later worked at a gay bar called Different Strokes. In 1989, Dem enrolled in law school and interned for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.

Dem passed away on January 24, 2023, after a battle with cancer.
