Coolest Retard was the one of the original, longest running and most feature rich fanzines for the early Chicago punk scene. It was started by Craig Schmidt and Eric Newcomer in 1979 and consistently released issues until 1983. Steve Albini said in the liner notes to the Basement Screams CD reissue that it was the "one fanzine" for the scene's earliest days.
